A common misnomer about documentary filmmaking is that it is made without the same preparation as narrative film. In this class, learn everything you need to be thinking, how to prepare, and how to think like a documentarian; before your crew hits the field, develop your idea at Chicago Filmmakers.

This class will be held on Zoom on Wednesdays, October 9 to November 13, from 6:30 to 9:30 PM CST.
Do you want to make a documentary? This course will provide you with a comprehensive overview of what it takes to produce your own nonfiction film or series. We’ll guide you through every step of the process: from the creative development of your idea to understanding the machinations of the industry to understanding the basics of how to execute your idea at a professional level. By the end of this course, you’ll know how to turn your ideas into reality and you’ll have the basics of a documentary proposal in hand.

Once you register for the class, you will receive an email each week with a link to access the online classroom via Zoom. All class materials are included and will be emailed to registered students.
Technical requirements: Students can access the course via a computer or smartphone. While access to a webcam or phone camera is preferable, only audio and the ability to view video are required. Students will need to install the Zoom app on their computer or smartphone, but no account is required.
